ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Dal segno

Dal segno is a fancy Italian word that means "from the sign". In music, it's often written as "D.S." or "D.S. al segno" and it's a special instruction that tells musicians to jump back to a specific point in the music and start playing again from there.

Imagine you're coloring a picture book and you've already colored in the first four pages. But then you decide you want to color in the first page again, starting from the beginning. So, you look for a special symbol, let's call it a "jumping arrow", that tells you where to go back to. When you see that symbol, you know to flip back to the first page and start coloring again, but this time you're going to color the whole thing in differently.

That's pretty much what dal segno is in music. It's a symbol that tells musicians to go back to a specific point in the music, and then keep playing from that point. It's like pressing the "rewind" button on a movie and going back to a specific scene, but instead of watching it again, you're playing it again, but maybe with some changes or differences this time around.

Overall, dal segno is just a way for musicians to repeat part of a piece of music in a specific way. So, if you ever see "D.S." or "D.S. al segno" in your music, don't worry - it just means you have to go back to a specific point and play it again!
