Darien scheme

So, a long time ago, a man named King William wanted to make friends with a country called Scotland. He thought one way to do this was to help them make more money.

So, he gave some money to a man named William Paterson who wanted to start a big project called the Darien Scheme. This project was going to make a new colony in a place called Panama.

But, making a new colony is really hard work. Lots of things can go wrong, like running out of food or getting attacked by animals or people who live there.

So, even though a lot of people wanted to help the project, not everything worked out. They didn't bring enough food or supplies, and many people died.

In the end, the project was a big failure. It lost lots of money and didn't make the Scottish people rich like they wanted. This made a lot of people angry and upset with King William, and it had a big impact on the economy of Scotland for a long time.
