ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Dark pattern

Dark patterns are tricks used by websites and apps to try to get you to do something that you might not want to do. For example, a website might have a sign-up button that looks like it will give you something for free, but if you click it you get put into a subscription that costs money each month. Another example would be when you are shopping online and it shows you the total amount with a checkout button right next to it, but when you click the checkout button, it adds more things to your cart that you didn't expect. These tricks can be hard to spot and can make it confusing to figure out what you are signing up for or how much you are really paying. So, it's best to be careful and to read things carefully when you're online so that you don't get tricked by dark patterns.
