ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Dead cotton

So imagine you have a plant called cotton. It's a type of plant that grows soft fluffy fibers on it. These fibers are used to make really comfortable clothes, like soft t-shirts and cozy bedsheets.

Now, sometimes when cotton plants are growing, they can face some problems. Just like how sometimes people get sick or hurt, plants can also get sick or hurt. When a cotton plant faces a big problem, it can die. When a plant dies, it means it can't grow anymore, and all the leaves and fibers on it become lifeless and dry.

When we say "dead cotton," we mean cotton that comes from a plant that has died. Since the plant is no longer alive, it cannot produce any more fibers or leaves. So the cotton that comes from a dead plant can't be used to make new clothes or other things.

But sometimes, instead of wasting this dead cotton, people use it for different purposes. Dead cotton can be used to make things like paper, mattresses, or stuffing for toys. It may not be as soft or good as the cotton from living plants, but it can still be useful for other things.

So even though a cotton plant may die, we can still find a way to use the cotton it produces, and give it a second life, instead of throwing it away.
