ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Decarburization

Decarburization is when we take something that has carbon (like coal or oil) and we make it lose some of the carbon so that it becomes more pure. It's like if you had a big pizza with lots of toppings, but you didn't want all of the toppings, so you picked some off to make it simpler.

This process happens in a special kind of furnace where we heat up the coal or oil really hot and add some special gases to it. The gases make the carbon start to come out of the coal or oil and turn into a gas itself. Then, the gas goes away into the air, but the material that we want is left behind, and it has less carbon in it than it did before.

This process is used in many different ways, like making steel or other metals that need to be very pure. When we take out some of the carbon, the metal becomes stronger and more durable. It's like taking away some of the distractions, so the metal can focus on being good at one thing.
