ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Steelmaking

Steel is a really strong material that we use to make lots of things, like buildings, cars, and even silverware. To make steel, we have to start with iron. Iron is a common material found in the Earth. It's like a little bit of dirt that contains a metal that is really useful.

Now, to turn iron into steel, we do something called "steelmaking." First, we need to get rid of all the dirt and impurities in the iron. We use big machines to do this, called furnaces. The furnaces get really hot, so we have to be very careful and wear special clothes to protect ourselves. Then, we put the iron into the furnace and heat it up until it melts.

Next, we add some other materials to the melted iron to make it stronger and resistant to rust. These materials could be things like carbon or other metals. We mix everything together really well and keep heating it up. We do this until we get a new material called "steel."

Finally, we take the steel out of the furnace and let it cool down. Usually, we turn it into big blocks or sheets so that we can use it to make things. And that's how we make steel!
