Defense Language Proficiency Tests
Do you know how when you learn a different language in school or from a teacher, you have to take a test to prove that you learned it well? Well, grown-ups who work for the military also have to do this. They have to take a test to show that they know how to speak the language of the people they might have to talk to during their job, like when they go to another country.
It’s called the Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT) and it’s like a big quiz with lots of questions and tasks to do in the language they learned. Some questions might ask about what someone said or wants to do, while other tasks might ask them to read a story in that language and answer questions about it. The questions can be really hard, so people have to study and practice a lot to do well.
The test is important because it helps the military know how well each person can understand and speak the language. And if someone did really well on the test, they might get better jobs and higher pay because they’re so good at speaking other languages.
