ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Democritus

So imagine you have a big cookie. Now, imagine you break that cookie into tiny little pieces. These tiny pieces are called particles or atoms. Democritus was a very smart man who lived a long time ago in Greece. He thought that everything was made up of these tiny particles and that they were too small to see with our eyes.

Democritus believed that these particles were always moving and bumping into each other. He also thought that different materials were made up of different types of particles and how these particles were arranged would determine what that material was like. For example, he thought that a rock was made up of particles that were tightly packed together, while a cloud was made up of particles that were more spread out.

Democritus's ideas about the tiny particles that make up everything around us helped scientists understand how things work in our world. Even though he lived a long time ago, Democritus is still remembered for his ideas and his contributions to science.
