ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Demythologization

Demythologization means taking away the magic or mystery from a story or idea. It's like when your parents tell you that Santa Claus isn't real, or when you learn that princesses in stories aren't always saved by princes and can save themselves.

In religion, demythologization means trying to understand the important messages and ideas behind stories, instead of just taking them literally. It's like reading a fairy tale and figuring out what it's trying to teach you about bravery or kindness, instead of just believing in talking animals and fairy godmothers.

In other words, demythologization is a way to look deeper into stories and ideas, and to try to find their true meaning, without getting caught up in things that might not be real or true.
