ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Deoxy sugar

Deoxy sugar is like a special kind of sugar that is missing a small piece called an oxygen molecule. It's like having a cookie that's missing a chocolate chip!

Just like regular sugar, deoxy sugar is made up of tiny building blocks called molecules. These molecules are called monosaccharides, and they link together to make big chains called polysaccharides.

But because deoxy sugar is missing that little oxygen piece, its structure is a bit different than regular sugar. It's like how a puzzle with one missing piece looks a bit different from a completed puzzle.

Scientists are really interested in deoxy sugar because they have found it in important things in our bodies like DNA and other molecules that control our cells. It's kind of like finding that missing puzzle piece in a really important picture!
