ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Derek Bickerton

Okay kiddo, so let's talk about Derek Bickerton! He was a really smart guy who studied language and how humans use it. He noticed that there are some things that all languages have in common, like how we use nouns and verbs to talk about things and actions.

But he also noticed something really interesting. There are some languages, like English or Spanish, that have a lot of words for different things and ideas. But there are other languages, spoken by small groups of people in remote parts of the world, that have very few words. Some of these languages only have a handful of words for colors, for example.

Bickerton thought that this was because humans have what he called a "language instinct." This means that we are born with the ability to learn language, even though we don't know anything about it when we are born. Our brains are just really good at figuring out how language works and learning whatever language we hear around us.

But Bickerton also thought that sometimes this instinct might not be enough to learn a complex language like English or Spanish. He thought that in order to learn an advanced language, we need a lot of experiences and input from the people around us.

So what can we learn from Derek Bickerton? We know that humans are really good at using language, but we also know that it takes a lot of practice and experience to learn a language well. And we also know that there are some languages out there that are very different from what we're used to hearing. All of this helps us understand how and why we use language in the way we do.
