ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Development of the Hebrew Bible canon

When people were writing stories in the olden days, they would write them down on different materials like scrolls, pieces of animal skin, and even stones. One group of people called the Hebrews also wrote down their stories, which they believed were very important because they were all about their relationship with God. They wrote these stories in a special language called Hebrew, which they spoke in their country, which was called Israel.

Over time, the Hebrews wrote down more and more of their stories. But it was not until many years later, when the Hebrews were ruled by a group of powerful people called the Romans, that they decided to put all their stories together in one big book. This book became known as the Hebrew Bible or the Tanakh.

To decide which stories to include in the Hebrew Bible, the Hebrews had to work together to choose the ones that they felt were the most important. They wanted to make sure that the stories they chose would be understood by people for many generations to come.

The Hebrews chose stories that talked about how their people came to be, about their relationship with God, and about the rules they needed to follow to live a good life. These stories were written by different people at different times, so the Hebrews had to make sure that they were all accurate and fit well together.

After many years of working together, the Hebrews decided on the final list of stories that would be included in the Hebrew Bible. They believed that these stories were essential to understanding their history and their relationship with God. Today, many people around the world still read and study the Hebrew Bible to learn more about the history, beliefs, and values of the Hebrews.
