ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Difference hierarchy

Ok, let's imagine that we are trying to put things in order from the most important to the least important. We call this putting things in a "hierarchy".

Now, let's say we have a bunch of things that are a little different from each other. For example, we have different colors like red, blue and yellow. We also have different shapes like squares, circles and triangles.

We can create a "difference hierarchy" by deciding which of these things is the most different from the others. For example, we might say that colors are more different from each other than shapes. This means that color would be at the top of our difference hierarchy, and shapes would be below it.

But then we can go even deeper and look at which colors are most different from each other. For example, we might say that red is more different from blue than it is from yellow. So, we would put red higher up in the difference hierarchy than blue or yellow.

We can keep doing this for as long as we want, looking at the differences between different things and deciding which ones are more or less important. This helps us understand how things are related to each other and how they are different.
