ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Digital protective relay

Have you ever played freeze tag? Like when someone tags you and you have to freeze until someone unfreezes you? Well, a digital protective relay is like the person who unfreezes you.

In the world of electricity, sometimes things can go wrong and create a dangerous situation. So, to keep everyone safe, there are devices called protective relays that monitor the electricity and can "freeze" it (turn it off) if something bad happens.

Now, a digital protective relay is basically a super smart computer that does this job really well. It uses special sensors to constantly check the electricity and makes super fast decisions about what to do if it detects a problem. It can even use complex math (like addition and subtraction) to figure out if everything is working properly.

So, just like how the person who unfreezes you keeps the game of tag safe and fun, a digital protective relay keeps electricity safe and running smoothly!
