ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Direct mail fundraising

Direct mail fundraising is like writing a letter to people to ask for money. The letter talks about why you need money and how their help can make a difference. It's like asking your parents for some extra money when you really want to buy something.

First, the organization creating the letter needs to figure out who they want to send the letter to. They may choose people who have donated in the past or people who they think might be interested in their cause.

Next, they write a letter explaining all the good things they do, why they need money and how the person reading the letter can help. They may also include pictures to show what they are talking about.

They put the letter in an envelope and send it to the people they chose. When the people receive the letter, they read it and decide if they want to donate any money. If they do, they can tear off a part of the letter and send it back with the money they donate.

After the organization gets the donations, they can use it to do good things like helping people, animals, or the planet. And that's how direct mail fundraising works, just like asking for an allowance, but for a good cause.
