ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Directory service

A directory service is like a big electronic address book. It's a way of keeping track of a lot of information about people and things, like names, addresses, phone numbers and emails. It can also be used to store things like passwords or access rights. All of this information is stored on a computer, so it can be accessed quickly and securely. If you need to look up someone's address or phone number, you can use the directory service instead of going through a paper address book or having to call them. It makes things much faster and easier.
