Disability studies in education is when we learn about the experiences and needs of people who have disabilities, in schools and other places where we go to learn. Imagine if you and your friends all went to a school that only had stairs, and no ramps or elevators. If one of your friends had trouble using the stairs because they used a wheelchair, they would feel left out and might not be able to learn in the same way as everybody else. Disability studies help us to think about how we can make schools and other places inclusive for everybody, no matter what their abilities are. We learn about how people with disabilities might need different resources, tools or support to be successful in their learning, and we also learn about how people with disabilities can have very different experiences when they are in learning environments, compared to people without disabilities. Disability studies teaches us to be kind and thoughtful towards people with disabilities, so that everyone can feel included and have the chance to learn and grow.
