District of Columbia v. Heller

Okay, so do you remember that there's a thing called the Constitution that tells us all about our rights and how the country should be run? One of those rights is the right to bear arms, which means you can own guns if you want to.

But, in Washington D.C., which is our country's capital city, there was a law that said people couldn't own guns at all. A man named Dick Heller didn't like this law because he wanted to be able to own a gun to protect himself. So, he challenged the law in court.

The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which is the highest court in the land. The Supreme Court had to decide if the law in Washington D.C. was okay or if it went against the Constitution and people's rights.

In the end, the Supreme Court decided that the law was not okay because it went against the Second Amendment, which is the part of the Constitution that talks about the right to bear arms. This meant that Dick Heller and other people in Washington D.C. could now own guns if they wanted to, as long as they followed the rules and laws about owning and using them safely.
