ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Division by zero

Okay kiddo, let's talk about division by zero. So, when we divide things, we are actually trying to see how many times one number can fit into another number. For example, if you have 6 cookies, and you want to share them equally among 2 of your friends, you will give each friend 3 cookies.

But what happens when we try to divide a number by 0? This is where things get a bit tricky. Usually, when we divide by a number, we are looking for how many times that number can fit into the other number. But, if we try to do this with 0, the answer doesn't make sense. This is because we can't fit any number of times into 0.

To make it simpler, let's say you have 0 cookies and you want to share them with your friend. How many cookies can you give them? You can't give them any, right? Because there are no cookies to share!

So, the same rule applies in math. When we try to divide a number by 0, the answer can't be found because we can't fit any number of times into 0. So, we say that the result of dividing by 0 is undefined or we can't find the answer.

That's why we should always be careful when doing math and make sure we don't divide by 0 because it doesn't make sense.
