Divorce in Islam is when a husband and wife decide they don’t want to be married to each other anymore. Just like when you sometimes don’t want to play with a toy anymore, grown-ups sometimes don’t want to be together anymore.
In Islam, there are certain rules that must be followed for a divorce to be valid. The first thing that must happen is the husband must say the word “talaq” three times to his wife. This means he officially wants to divorce her.
After that, there is a waiting period of three months, called the “iddah,” where the couple must still live together but they are not allowed to have any physical relations or intimacy. This is to give them time to think about their decision and to see if they can work things out.
If, after the waiting period, the husband and wife still want to go through with the divorce, they can go to a court or a religious council to make it official. A judge or an Islamic scholar will look at the situation and decide what is fair for both sides.
All throughout this process, Islam teaches that divorce should be the last option and that the couple should try to work things out and find solutions to their problems before choosing to divorce.
