Diwali (Jainism)

Diwali is a festival that is celebrated by Jains as well as many other people of different religions. It usually falls in October or November and lasts for five days. During Diwali, Jains honor the teachings and principles of their religion and also express their gratitude to their gods.

To prepare for Diwali, Jains clean their homes and business premises. This is done to ensure that their homes are free from any dirt or impurities. They also light lamps, decorate their homes with flowers and chants prayers to the gods.

One of the most popular Jain rituals during Diwali is the "Samayik" ceremony. This is a period where Jains sit and meditate for a set amount of time, usually 48 or 72 minutes. During this moment, they reflect on their actions, thoughts, and emotions to ensure that they are following the teachings of their religion.

Another important part of Diwali for Jains is the New Year. It is believed that Diwali marks the end of the old year and the beginning of a new one. So, Jains also use this period to make resolutions for the coming year and to contemplate on the things they want to achieve.

Finally, on the last day of the Diwali festival, Jains celebrate the anniversary of Lord Mahavira's attainment of the Kevala Jnana (the highest knowledge of the Jain scriptures). This is done by performing various rituals and offerings to the gods.

In conclusion, Diwali is a significant and joyous event for Jains. It is a time to reflect, cleanse, and renew oneself spiritually while also honoring the teachings of their religion.
