ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Double patenting

Double patenting is when someone tries to get two patents for the same invention or idea. It's like trying to get two stickers that have the same picture on them.

This is not allowed because once you have a patent for something, it means you have exclusive rights to make, use, and sell that invention for a certain number of years. If someone else was allowed to get a second patent for the same thing, it would be unfair because it would give them the same exclusive rights.

So, to prevent this from happening, if someone tries to get a second patent for the same invention, the patent office will say "nope, sorry, that's already been done. You can't have two stickers with the same picture."

This helps make sure that people can't monopolize ideas and inventions, and helps promote competition and innovation.
