ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Drug injection

Okay kiddo, so you know how when you get a shot at the doctor, they use a needle to put medicine into your body? Well sometimes grown-ups use needles to put medicine or drugs into their body too, but it's not always safe.

When you get a shot at the doctor, they use a really tiny needle to put a small amount of medicine into your body where it can do some good. But sometimes people who use drugs use really big needles, and they put the drugs into a vein in their body. Veins are like little tubes in your body that carry blood around. When you put drugs right into a vein, they go into your bloodstream really fast and can make you feel different right away.

But, the thing is, putting drugs directly into your bloodstream like that can be really dangerous. It can make you sick, or even hurt your body so much that you get really sick or even die. That's why it's important to always talk to a doctor or another trusted grown-up before putting anything into your body, and to only take medicine that a doctor has given you for a specific reason.

Remember, taking care of your body is super important, and relying on drugs to make you feel better isn't a good idea. It's much better to eat healthy foods, get enough sleep, and stay active to take care of yourself.
