ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Drunken trees

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a grown-up who drank too much beer or wine and started to wobble around unsteadily? Well, sometimes trees can act the same way after they drink too much water!

You see, trees need water to survive and grow, but sometimes they get too much and start to feel a little tipsy. This happens when the ground around the tree gets really wet, like after a big rainstorm or when the snow melts in the spring.

When the tree gets too much water, its roots can't hold it all in and the water starts to flow up into the trunk and branches. The tree's cells get all filled up with water, kind of like how your tummy feels after you drink too much juice. This causes the tree to get a little wobbly and start to lean to one side or the other.

But don't worry, trees are tough survivors and can usually shake off their tipsiness after a little while. They just need to wait for the ground to dry out and their cells to get back to normal. So, just like grown-ups need to take it easy on the beer and wine, sometimes trees need to take it easy on the water so they don't get too drunk and wobble around!
