Dugout canoe

A dugout canoe is like a really big boat made out of wood. Before people had machines to cut wood into planks, they would use a special tool called an axe to chop down a tree trunk. Then, they would use the same tool to carve out the inside of the tree trunk until it looked like a boat.

Once they had carved out the inside, they would smooth it out to make it nice and flat. Then, they would use fire to burn the inside of the canoe. This would make the wood stronger and harder. After that, they would add other pieces of wood to make the sides of the canoe higher.

The finished product was a big boat that could hold a lot of people and things. People would use dugout canoes to travel across rivers and oceans or to go fishing. It was a really important invention because it helped people travel and trade with other communities.
