Duty to retreat

Duty to retreat means that if you're in a situation where you might hurt someone, you have to try to get away or hide first. You can only use force when you really have to protect yourself or someone else. It's like when you're playing tag and you run away from the person who's "it." You don't want to get tagged, but you also don't want to hurt the person who's "it." So you run away from them instead of pushing them or hitting them. That's what duty to retreat means, always try to run or avoid hurting someone before fighting back.
