ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Dwarf spheroidal galaxy

Imagine there are some very small, but very old and interesting cities floating around in space. These cities are so small that they are called dwarf cities, and they are shaped like round balls, or spheres. We call them dwarf spheroidal galaxies, but you can think of them as tiny cities in space.

These little cities have very few stars and not a lot of gas or dust floating around them, which means they don't have a lot of new star formation going on. However, they do have a lot of dark matter surrounding them. Dark matter is something we can't see, but we know it's there because we can see the effects of its gravitational pull on other objects in space.

Overall, dwarf spheroidal galaxies are pretty mysterious and can teach us a lot about the universe. So, scientists study them closely to try to understand what they're made of, how they formed, and what they can tell us about the early days of the universe.
