ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Earthly Branches

Hey kiddo! Have you ever heard about the earthly branches?

No? Well, let me explain it to you!

You know how we have 12 months in a year? And each month has a different name like January, February, March and so on?

In Chinese culture, they have something similar called "earthly branches." There are also 12 of them, just like the 12 months we have in a year.

But instead of naming each branch after a month, they named each branch after an animal! Cool, right?

They named them after animals because they believe that each animal has some special qualities, and those qualities can affect the year or period that the animal represents.

Here are the 12 earthly branches and the animals they represent:

1. Rat
2. Ox
3. Tiger
4. Rabbit
5. Dragon
6. Snake
7. Horse
8. Goat/Sheep
9. Monkey
10. Rooster
11. Dog
12. Pig

Each year is represented by one of the earthly branches, and it is believed that the animal that represents that year has some influence over the people born in that year.

So, if you were born in the year of the Rat, for example, it is believed that you might have some of the qualities of a Rat, such as being clever, resourceful, and quick-witted.

That's pretty much it, kiddo! Now you know all about the earthly branches and how they work. Did that make sense to you?
