ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Earthquake sensitive

Imagine you're sitting in a chair and someone suddenly pokes you. You feel it right away, right? That's because you're sensitive to touch. Just like how you're sensitive to touch, the Earth is sensitive to movement. Sometimes, the Earth moves a little bit and that's okay. But when it moves a lot, it can cause an earthquake.

Scientists have made special machines that can detect when the Earth moves even just a little bit. These sensitive machines are like your ears, they can hear sounds that are too quiet for your regular ears to hear. The machines tell the scientists when the Earth is moving and how big the movement is.

People who live in places like California or Japan know that earthquakes can happen at any time. That's why they build their homes and buildings in a special way to help keep them safe. It's also why they have earthquake drills at school or work. If you ever feel the ground shaking, remember to drop, cover, and hold on until the shaking stops.
