Ease (sewing)

When you want to sew something like a shirt, a dress or a pair of pants, you need to make sure that the fabric can stretch and move around without breaking. Otherwise, the garment will be uncomfortable to wear and may tear apart. This is where "ease" comes in.

Ease is the extra space that is added to a garment to make it comfortable and easy to move in. Think of it like giving your clothes some breathing room. Without ease, your clothes would be tight and restrictive, making it hard to move your arms, legs, or torso.

Sewing patterns include ease allowances, which are measured in inches or centimeters, to make sure that the garment fits well and feels comfortable. There are different types of ease, such as wearing ease, design ease, and comfort ease.

Wearing ease is the amount of extra space that is added to a garment to make it fit over your body without being too tight. Design ease is the amount of extra space that is added to give the garment a particular style, like a flowing skirt or a billowy sleeve. Comfort ease is the amount of extra space added for comfort, like when you sit down or move your arms.

So when you sew a garment, you need to make sure that you add the right amount of ease so that it fits well and feels comfortable to wear. This will ensure that you can move around easily, look stylish, and feel great in your clothes!
