An edict is a fancy word that means when somebody who is in charge says something is going to happen and everybody has to do it. It's kind of like when your mom or dad tells you that you have to clean your room and you have no choice but to do it. An edict can be issued by someone who is very important, like a king or queen, or someone who is in charge of a big organization, like a boss.
Let's say the king says that all the people in the kingdom have to go to bed early every night. That's an edict. Even if you don't want to go to bed early, you have to do it because the king said so. The king might issue edicts to make sure everyone in the kingdom is safe or that the kingdom is running smoothly.
So, an edict is like a rule that you have to follow because someone important said you have to. It's important to follow edicts because not doing so can get you in trouble.
