ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Electric fish

Electric fish are special types of fish that can produce electricity. Just like how we use batteries or plug things into outlets to get electricity, electric fish make their own electricity inside their bodies. They do this through special organs called electrocytes.

When an electric fish wants to produce electricity, it sends a signal to its electrocytes which then release a bunch of ions (which are little, tiny particles with an electrical charge). These ions flow out of the electrocytes, and if there are enough of them in one place, they create an electric field - kind of like how magnets have a magnetic field around them that can push or pull other magnets.

Electric fish use their electric fields for a bunch of different things. Some use them to navigate in murky water where they can't see very well. By sensing changes in the electric field around them, they can tell if there are objects or other fish nearby. Others use their electric fields to stun or kill prey. They can sense the electric fields of other fish or animals and send out an electric shock that can immobilize or even kill them.

Overall, electric fish are pretty cool and have some pretty amazing adaptations that help them survive in their environments.
