Electrodiagnostic medicine

Electrodiagnostic medicine is like playing detective. It's used to help doctors figure out what is going on with your nerves and muscles. Doctors use it to find out why you might be having problems with movement or feeling.

It starts with a test called an electromyography (EMG), which measures the electrical signals that your nerves and muscles make. It involves sticking a special needle into your muscles so that the doctors can measure the signals. It can tell the doctor if the muscle or nerve is working normally.

The next test is called a nerve conduction study (NCS). This measures the electrical messages that your nerves send to your muscles. These messages tell your muscles what to do. The doctor can measure these messages by putting a special tiny patch on your skin and sending an electrical signal through it.

Then the doctor might give you a special medication that makes your muscles stronger and more responsive to the electrical signals.

All this testing helps the doctor figure out what is wrong so that they can better treat you.
