ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Electron multiplier

An electron multiplier is like a magic jar that turns tiny bits of electricity called electrons into a big group of electrons. It works a bit like a game of jump rope. Imagine a group of friends spinning a jump rope. If one more friend joins in and starts jumping at the right time, they can all jump higher and higher together. That's what the electron multiplier does with electrons!

First, the electrons come into the electron multiplier like little kids coming to play. Inside, there are these special plates that look kind of like a ladder. The electrons start jumping up and down on the first plate. This makes more electrons jump off the second plate, like the second kid jumping in a jump rope game.

Then, those electrons jump onto another plate and make even more electrons jump off the next plate. It's like the jump rope game getting faster and faster. This keeps happening until there are a whole bunch of electrons all jumping together, like all the kids in a big jump rope game. Finally, the electrons all jump out of the electron multiplier together and go on to do their important work.

Scientists use electron multipliers in special machines called mass spectrometers to study tiny particles and molecules. It helps them see things that are too small to see with their eyes or even with regular microscopes. It's like having a magic jar that turns small things into big things so that scientists can learn more about them!
