An elephant in the room is a problem or situation that everyone is aware of, but no one wants to talk about. It is like an elephant taking up so much space that you can't ignore it, but nobody mentions it. For example, if two people are in a room and one person has done something wrong and the other person knows about it, but neither person wants to talk about it, that's an elephant in the room.
