ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Eligible Receiver 97

Okay kiddo, so when you watch a football game, sometimes one player throws the ball to another player. But not just any player can catch the ball! There are rules about who can catch it.

The "eligible receiver" rule says that only certain players on the team can catch the ball. Those players are the ones who are on the playing field before the ball is snapped (that's when the ball is given to the person who will throw it). The players who can catch the ball are usually the ones who are wearing certain numbers on their jerseys, like 80 or 88.

So, on play number 97, the announcer is saying that there is a player on the field who is allowed to catch the ball because he is an eligible receiver. This is important because if a player who is not an eligible receiver catches the ball, it's against the rules and the other team can get in trouble for it.

Does that make sense?
