ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Elliptic geometry

Okay kiddo, do you know what a flat surface like a piece of paper looks like? It's called Euclidean geometry. But now imagine if the surface of the paper was curved like a soccer ball, and lines were drawn on it. That's called elliptic geometry!

In this kind of geometry, a straight line doesn't look like a straight line anymore. It actually looks like a curved line that circles around and returns to its starting point. This may seem confusing, but it actually makes sense.

Another thing that is different in elliptic geometry is that angles don't add up to 180 degrees like we're used to in Euclidean geometry. Instead, the angles are always bigger than 180 degrees!

This kind of geometry may seem strange, but it's actually very useful. It can help us understand things like the surface of the Earth, which is curved, and how to measure distances and navigate on it. So, even though it may look different, elliptic geometry is just another way to understand the world around us!
