ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Eloquent cortex

Our brains are like a big playground with many different areas that help us do different things. Some areas help us see and hear, while others help us move our bodies and think. The eloquent cortex is a special part of our brain playground that is very important for talking and understanding language. It is like the stage on which our brain actors perform language shows.

The eloquent cortex is made up of two parts, called the Broca's area and the Wernicke's area. Broca's area helps us speak words and put together sentences, like when we say "I want a cookie, please." Wernicke's area helps us understand what other people are saying, like when someone asks us if we want a cookie and we say "yes, please."

If something goes wrong in the eloquent cortex, we may have trouble talking or understanding what other people are saying. This can happen if someone gets hurt or sick, for example. But with practice and help, our brain can often find new ways to perform these language tasks. So, we can keep playing and enjoying the language shows in our brain playground!
