ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Embourgeoisement thesis

Okay, so imagine you're playing with some toys and you have a little bit of money that you earned from doing chores. You might start to think, "Wow, I can buy nicer toys now!" And as you keep earning more and more money, you might continue to buy even nicer things and start to feel like a "grown-up" with more responsibilities and fancier possessions.

Well, some people think something similar happens with grown-ups when they start earning more money- they start to feel and act like they're upper class! This idea is called the "embourgeoisement thesis." Basically, it suggests that as people earn more money, they start to adopt the values, attitudes, and behaviors of the upper class, even if they weren't born into it.

For example, someone who grew up in a working-class family might start to dress fancier, go on luxury vacations, and only hang out with people who also have a lot of money if they start earning a lot themselves. Some people might argue that this "embourgeoisement" makes society less equal, or that people who are "embourgeoised" forget where they came from and stop caring about people who are still struggling financially.

But, just like not every kid with a bit of extra money wants to buy fancy toys, not every person who earns more money wants to become part of the upper class, and some people might even become more committed to supporting working-class communities once they have more power and resources. So, while the embourgeoisement thesis is an interesting idea, it's not something that happens to every person or that we should take for granted.
