ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Energy customer switching

Okay kiddo, so you know how when you want to buy a toy, you can choose which store you go to? Well, grown-ups get to choose which company they buy their energy from too! This is called energy customer switching.

You see, different energy companies offer different prices and types of energy. Some might use more coal or natural gas while others use more wind or solar power. So, if a grown-up wants to pay less for their energy or wants to support companies that use more clean energy, they can choose to switch from one energy company to another.

But it's not as easy as just going to a different store, kiddo. The grown-up has to make sure that their new energy company can provide energy to their home or business and that they won't have any problems with their current energy company. They also have to check that they won't have to pay a penalty for switching.

But sometimes, energy companies make it easier for people to switch. They might offer special deals or incentives to get people to choose their company. And the good news is that switching to a cleaner energy company can help the Earth by reducing the amount of harmful greenhouse gases that are released into the air!

So that's energy customer switching, kiddo. Grown-ups get to choose which energy company to buy their energy from, and sometimes they can save money and help the environment by switching to a different company.
