ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Engine configuration

An engine is like a big and complicated puzzle made up of many different parts. The way these parts are arranged is called the engine configuration.

There are different types of engine configurations, but the most common ones are called inline, V, and flat.

An inline engine has all its cylinders in a straight line, like a row of toys lined up in a row. This makes it nice and simple, but it can also be long and hard to fit in some cars.

A V engine has its cylinders arranged in two groups, angled away from each other like the top of a V. This makes it shorter and more compact, which can help it fit in smaller cars. It's like having two rows of toys that meet in the middle.

A flat engine has its cylinders arranged horizontally, like pancakes on a plate. This makes it even shorter and more compact than a V engine. It's like having two rows of toys laying flat.

Different types of engines can have different strengths and weaknesses, depending on how they're put together. Ultimately, the engine configuration is what determines things like how powerful the engine is, how efficient it is, and how it sounds.
