England v Scotland representative football matches (1870–1872)

Before we begin, do you know what football (also known as soccer) is? It's a game where two teams try to kick a ball into a goal to score points.

Now, a long time ago in 1870, England and Scotland played a football match against each other. They picked players to represent their country, or in other words, to play on behalf of their country. This is called a representative match.

It was a big deal because there weren't many football games played between countries back then. When England and Scotland played each other, it was the first time teams from different countries had played against each other.

The match ended in a draw, which means both teams got the same amount of goals. But they played again the next year in 1871, and this time, England won. Scotland wasn't too happy about that, so they played each other again in 1872. This time, Scotland won.

These representative matches are important because they helped create the idea of national teams playing against each other, which is something that still happens today. It's like when you support your favorite football team and they play against another team, except it's countries playing against each other instead of teams from the same place.
