ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Environmental design and planning

Do you remember playing with your toy blocks and building towers? Or have you ever wondered why the park looks so pretty and has many trees and benches to relax on? This is what environmental design and planning is all about!

Environmental design and planning is a way of designing and planning the buildings, parks, streets and other structures that we see in our cities and towns, in a way that is good for the environment and the people who live there. It’s like making sure we walk in the right path to keep our shoes clean and our feet happy.

When people plan and design a building or a park, they think about how to make it safe and comfortable for people to live in, and how to make it good for our planet too. They think about how to use less energy, how to make sure we have clean air and water and how to protect animals and plants. They think about what colors to use, what materials to choose and where to put things.

Just like when you play with your toy blocks, you have to think about where to put each one to make sure it stays up and looks nice, experts in design and planning also have to think like you do. They think about how to put things together so that it looks good and stays strong. For example, they think about how to make a building strong to stand against wind and rain and make sure the windows let in sunlight but not too much heat.

Therefore, environmental design and planning is all about making our world a better place to live in by making sure that the things we build and use are good for the environment and the people who live in it. This way, we can have a safe and happy world to live in.
