ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Epidermis

The epidermis is the outermost layer of our skin, kind of like the protective shield that covers our body. It is the part of the skin that we can see and touch. It’s like the colored part of your fingernail that sits on top of your finger. The epidermis is made up of small skin cells that grow quickly and then get pushed up to the surface to replace the old, dead cells.

The epidermis is important because it protects our body from harmful things in the environment like germs and harmful UV rays. It also helps to keep our body fluids inside our body, so we don’t dry out.

Just like a coat of paint, the epidermis is what makes us look distinct and unique. The pigment cells in the epidermis determine the color of your skin, hair, and eyes.

So, to sum it up, the epidermis is the outer layer of our skin, it protects us from harmful things in the environment, keeps our body fluids inside, and determines our physical appearance like skin color, hair color, and eye color.
