Your skin is a very important part of your body because it protects everything inside of it. But sometimes, your skin can get hurt. When this happens, your body needs to fix it to make sure it keeps working properly.
When you get a cut or a scrape, your body starts to work right away to fix it. Blood comes out of the wound to help clean it out and to bring all the things your body needs to heal it. Then, special cells called white blood cells and platelets start to work together to stop any bleeding and to start building new skin.
These special cells make a scab, which is like a little roof over your cut or scrape. This helps keep it protected and helps your body make new skin underneath. Sometimes, you might feel itchy when you have a scab, but it is important not to scratch it because it could hurt your healing skin.
As your body makes new skin, your scab will get smaller and smaller until it falls off. Under the scab, your body made new skin cells that will work just like the old ones did.
It is important that you take care of your skin so that it can do its job in protecting you. This means washing it with soap and water and putting sunscreen on when you go outside to protect it from the sun. If you get a cut or a scrape, make sure to clean it with soap and water and put a bandaid on it to help it heal.
