ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Error function

The error function is a fancy way of measuring how far off our math is from the actual answer. Imagine you wanted to do some math to figure out how hot it is outside, and you came up with a number. But when you checked with a thermometer, you realized that your math was a little bit wrong – it wasn't exactly as hot as you thought it was.

The error function tries to measure just how much we got it wrong. It takes in the difference between our answer and the real answer, and then does some more math to end up with a number that tells us how big that difference was.

Think of it like a ruler that measures how far apart two things are. If you have two blocks and you want to know how far apart they are, you can use a ruler to find out. The error function is like a ruler that measures how far off our math is from reality.
