Ethiopian music

Well, Ethiopian music is like a big colorful musical playground! Imagine you have lots of toys to play with, like drums, flutes, and strings. These toys are like the different instruments that Ethiopian musicians use to make their music.

Now, imagine that each toy has its own unique sound. You can tap on the drum and it makes a boom boom sound, blow on the flute and it makes a woosh woosh sound, and strum the strings and it makes a plink plink sound. The musicians in Ethiopia use these sounds to create different rhythms and melodies in their music.

Ethiopian music also has a very special singing style. The singers use a technique called "melisma," which means they stretch out one syllable and sing a lot of notes on it. So instead of just singing "la-la-la-la," they might sing "laaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh" and slide up and down through different notes. It's kind of like stretching out a piece of gum!

Another cool thing about Ethiopian music is that it has its own special scales. You know how there are different colors on a coloring book? Well, Ethiopian music has its own special set of notes that the musicians use to paint their musical pictures. These notes are different from the ones you might hear in Western music, like in songs on the radio or in movies.
