ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ethnonym

An ethnonym is a name that people use to identify themselves based on their ethnicity or culture. For example, if you are from Japan, you might identify yourself as Japanese. This is your ethnonym.

Just like you have a name that people use to call you, different groups of people also have names they use to identify themselves. These names can be based on where they come from, what language they speak, what they look like, or even their traditions and beliefs.

Having an ethnonym helps people feel a sense of belonging, and it allows others to understand more about their cultural background. So, when you meet someone and they tell you their ethnonym, remember that it is more than just a word- it represents their identity and heritage.
