ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

European Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship

Okay, imagine you're playing a game with your friends and you need someone to make sure the rules are being followed by everyone. The European Union is kind of like a big game, but for grown-ups, and the European Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights, and Citizenship is like the referee or the person in charge of keeping the game fair.

Justice means the person is responsible for making sure that people who break the rules in the EU are punished, just like the teacher who puts a misbehaving student in timeout.

Fundamental rights mean that the person is responsible for making sure that everyone in in the EU has the same rights and freedoms, just like your parents make sure that everyone in your family is treated fairly and given equal opportunities.

Citizenship means the person is responsible for making sure that everyone who lives in the EU is treated like they belong, no matter where they come from or what they look like.

So, just like how it's important to have someone in charge to make sure everyone is playing the game fairly, it's important to have someone in charge of making sure everyone in the EU is treated fairly and equally too.
