Evolution of aerobic fermentation

Okay kiddo, let's start with the basics. Do you know what fermentation is? It's when sugar is turned into something else, like alcohol or lactic acid.

Now, there are two types of fermentation: anaerobic and aerobic. Anaerobic means it happens without oxygen, and aerobic means it happens with oxygen.

At first, when life on Earth began, organisms could only do anaerobic fermentation because there was no oxygen in the air. But as time went on, some organisms started to use oxygen for energy instead of just fermenting sugar. This is called aerobic respiration.

Aerobic respiration is more efficient than anaerobic fermentation, meaning that it makes more energy from the same amount of sugar. But there was a problem: oxygen is actually toxic to some organisms, so they couldn't just switch over to aerobic respiration all at once.

So, they evolved a way to use both anaerobic fermentation and aerobic respiration at the same time. This is called aerobic fermentation. Basically, they use fermentation to make some energy without oxygen, but then when oxygen is available, they switch over to aerobic respiration to make even more energy.

Over time, more and more organisms evolved to be able to do aerobic respiration, so they didn't need to rely on fermentation as much. But some organisms still use aerobic fermentation, like yeast and some bacteria.

So, that's the evolution of aerobic fermentation in a nutshell. It's a way for organisms to make the most of the energy available to them, even if it's not always safe to use oxygen all the time.
